- Want to stay out late and enjoy Matsumoto’s nightlife
One Highlight From Each Hotel
Before getting into the details, here is one thing I particularly liked about each hotel.
Onyado Nono Matsumoto
The open-air bath on the top floor feels absolutely amazing.

TABINO HOTEL lit MATSUMOTO
The breakfast is incredibly good.
Matsumoto Hotel Kagetsu
There are many unique, independently owned restaurants and shops around the hotel.
Comparing How to Spend the Evening
How Do You Want to Spend Your Evening?
Next, let’s compare what your evening might look like at each hotel.
Onyado Nono Matsumoto and TABINO HOTEL lit MATSUMOTO are located close to each other, so they offer a fairly similar experience when it comes to walking around the city at night.
Onyado Nono Matsumoto
If you love baths, this is the hotel I recommend.
The bath is located on the 10th floor, where you can enjoy a spectacular view overlooking the Northern Japan Alps around Matsumoto.
If you want to relax after a long day of traveling while feeling the cool night air and listening to the sound of wind chimes, this is a great choice.
I especially recommend it to travelers who consider the bathing experience an important part of choosing a hotel.

TABINO HOTEL lit MATSUMOTO
This hotel is ideal if you simply want to spend a very comfortable and relaxing time in your room.
You can take a bath at your own pace without worrying about anything else.
And whenever you feel like going out, you can head into the city, enjoy some great food, or spend the night drinking at a local snack bar.
Then, when you return to the hotel, you can relax in your comfortable room and take another bath before going to bed.
If you are already expecting to wake up with a hangover but still want to go sightseeing the next day—or if you plan to enjoy Matsumoto’s nightlife for two nights in a row—you may want to consider staying here for multiple nights.

The comfort of the guest rooms is excellent !!
※Bathroom size may vary depending on the room type.
Matsumoto Hotel Kagetsu
Compared with the areas around the other two hotels, the neighborhood surrounding Matsumoto Hotel Kagetsu is relatively quiet and peaceful.
There is also a riverside area just a short walk away.
Rather than going out for a lively night, this hotel is better suited to travelers who want to stroll through quiet streets, discover an interesting place along the way, and stop in for a relaxed drink.
Breakfast / How to Spend the Morning
Where Should You Have Breakfast? / How to Spend Your Morning
Onyado Nono Matsumoto
There is a long-established coffee shop nearby that can have a line even early in the morning.
The interior has the nostalgic atmosphere of a classic Japanese kissaten, with old-fashioned furniture that makes you want to stay for hours.
TABINO HOTEL lit MATSUMOTO
If you want a delicious breakfast with plenty of variety, while taking your time to try different local flavors, this is a great option.
The dining area has large glass windows.

The view itself is mostly of the buildings outside, but if you enjoy having breakfast while natural morning light fills the room, you should enjoy the atmosphere here.
Matsumoto Hotel Kagetsu
Directly in front of the hotel is a café combined with a secondhand bookstore, located inside a renovated building originally constructed during Japan’s Taisho era.
It is a great choice if you want to enjoy a morning café experience that feels like a scene from a movie.
I also recommend taking an early morning walk through the atmospheric stone-paved streets around the hotel.
Reasons Not to Choose Each Hotel / Who It May Not Suit
Reasons Not to Choose Each Hotel / Who It May Not Be Suitable For
Onyado Nono Matsumoto
Honestly, there are not many major downsides that come to mind.
The floors throughout the hotel are covered with tatami, and you leave your shoes in a locker on the first floor.
If I had to point out one thing, people who tend to lose their keys should be careful with the locker key.
TABINO HOTEL lit MATSUMOTO
I would not recommend this hotel to travelers who want to spend a lot of time relaxing in shared hotel spaces, enjoying a large public bath, or using a sauna.
This hotel is particularly well suited to people who want to spend a comfortable and relaxing time inside their own room.
The other hotel facilities feel relatively simple and focused on providing the essentials.
Matsumoto Hotel Kagetsu
I would not recommend this hotel if staying very close to Matsumoto Station is your priority.
It may also not be the best choice if you want to stay within just a few minutes’ walk of the main nightlife areas.

Which Hotel Is Best for Visiting Both Matsumoto Castle and Azumino?
Visiting Both Matsumoto Castle and Azumino: Which Hotel Is Best?
In this section, rather than comparing the experience of staying inside each hotel, I will compare the three hotels purely in terms of how convenient they are for sightseeing.
I have not visited Matsumoto Castle enough times to base this section entirely on personal experience. Therefore, this comparison is based on official access information provided by the hotels and tourist attractions.
Onyado Nono Matsumoto
This is a good choice if you want to visit Azumino but also place a high priority on enjoying a hot bath at your hotel.
Onyado Nono Matsumoto is about a five-minute walk from the Oshiro Exit of Matsumoto Station.
If you are traveling toward Azumino by train, being able to get back to Matsumoto Station easily is a major advantage.
You can spend the morning exploring Azumino, return to Matsumoto for sightseeing in the city, and then relax in the bath at night.
It is a hotel that makes this kind of itinerary easy to organize.
TABINO HOTEL lit MATSUMOTO
This is a good choice for travelers who want to move between Matsumoto and Azumino as efficiently as possible using public transportation.
The hotel is about a four-minute walk from the Oshiro Exit of Matsumoto Station and about a one-minute walk from Matsumoto Bus Terminal.
If your itinerary involves using Matsumoto Station several times, even a difference of a few minutes of walking can become surprisingly convenient.
Matsumoto Hotel Kagetsu
If Matsumoto Castle is your main priority, I recommend this hotel.
Matsumoto Castle is about a five-minute walk from Matsumoto Hotel Kagetsu.
Matsumoto Station, on the other hand, is about a 15-minute walk away.

__________________________________________________________________________
Each of these three hotels offers a very different way to experience Matsumoto.
If you want to relax in a hot bath after sightseeing, Onyado Nono Matsumoto is a great choice. If comfort, convenience, and easy access to public transportation are your priorities, TABINO HOTEL lit MATSUMOTO may suit you better. And if you want to stay closer to Matsumoto Castle and enjoy a quieter, more atmospheric side of the city, Matsumoto Hotel Kagetsu is worth considering.
But the “best” hotel really depends on how you want to spend your time in Matsumoto.
If you are planning a trip and still cannot decide where to stay, feel free to leave a comment and tell me about your itinerary.

For example, let me know how many nights you are staying, whether you plan to visit Azumino, and what kind of evening you want to have in Matsumoto.
I would be happy to share my thoughts based on my own experience.
And if you have already stayed at one of these hotels, I would also love to hear what you thought. Your experience might help another traveler reading this article.
