How to Get to Daio Wasabi Farm from Matsumoto: 3 Best Ways

There are several ways to get to Daio Wasabi Farm from Matsumoto.

I enjoy comfortable, local travel that lets me explore a destination at my own pace. If you are using Matsumoto as your base, these are the three ways I recommend getting to Daio Wasabi Farm.

Each offers a different kind of trip.

1. Take the Train and Rent a Bicycle in Azumino

Personally, this is the option I recommend most.

First, take the JR Oito Line from Matsumoto Station to Hotaka Station. When you arrive at Hotaka Station, rent an electric-assist bicycle from the HELLO CYCLING station in front of the station and ride to Daio Wasabi Farm.

HELLO CYCLING is a bike-sharing service that lets you reserve and use bicycles through a smartphone app. There are several HELLO CYCLING stations around Azumino, so registering in advance is useful if you plan to explore the area by bicycle.

The appeal of cycling is not simply that it is an inexpensive way to get around. For me, the biggest advantage is being able to stop whenever something catches my attention.

You might come across beautiful countryside on the way to Daio Wasabi Farm, notice a small cafe or shop, or find a view that never appears in a guidebook. On a bicycle, you can simply stop and take a closer look.

That freedom to enjoy the journey itself is what makes cycling through Azumino so rewarding.

There is, however, a limit to how far you can comfortably travel by bicycle. A place that takes only about 15 minutes to reach by car may take considerably longer by bike.

This option is best suited to travelers who want to explore Daio Wasabi Farm and the Hotaka area slowly rather than covering a large area in one day.

In addition to HELLO CYCLING, some accommodations offer rental bicycles for their guests. If you are staying in Azumino, check whether your hotel or inn offers bicycle rentals when you make your reservation.

2. Rent a Car at Matsumoto Station

If you want to explore a wider area of Azumino, renting a car gives you much more freedom.

When using Matsumoto as your base, a simple plan is to rent a car near Matsumoto Station and drive directly toward Azumino.

Instead of checking rental car companies one by one, you can use QEEQ to compare prices, vehicle types, and rental companies near Matsumoto Station.

What Type of Rental Car Should You Choose?

For two or three people sightseeing in Azumino, a compact car will generally be enough.

Cars in the same class as the Toyota Yaris, Honda Fit, or Nissan Note are usually more affordable and easier to handle on narrow roads and in parking lots. That can make them a good choice for international travelers who are not accustomed to driving in Japan.

If you are traveling with four or more people or carrying several suitcases, a minivan or SUV may be more practical.

If you plan to visit mountain areas or travel during winter, check whether the vehicle has winter tires and four-wheel drive before booking.

Should You Add Rental Car Insurance?

If you are driving in a foreign country, I recommend considering more comprehensive coverage.

Even when basic insurance is included in the rental price, optional coverage may also be available. This can include a Collision Damage Waiver (CDW), which reduces the amount you may have to pay if the vehicle is damaged, as well as coverage related to non-operation charges while the vehicle is out of service.

Saving a few thousand yen on insurance may not be worth the extra worry during your trip. When comparing rental options, look at the coverage, deductible, and cancellation policy as well as the price.

What International Travelers Need to Know About Driving in Japan

The type of driver’s license required to drive in Japan varies depending on your country and the license you hold. In some cases, you will need an International Driving Permit, so check the requirements before leaving for Japan.

Renting a car takes a little more preparation than renting a bicycle, but it also opens up much more of Azumino.

You can visit Daio Wasabi Farm, explore Hotaka, stop at shops near the mountains, and visit smaller places in the countryside without being tied to a timetable.

If you want to discover more than the major tourist attractions, a rental car is one of the easiest ways to do it.

3. Visit Daio Wasabi Farm with a Tour Guide

I also recommend considering a guided visit to Daio Wasabi Farm.

If you arrive without much background knowledge, what you will mainly see is clear water, wasabi fields, and a beautiful rural landscape.

That alone can still be enjoyable. You can taste wasabi, take photographs, and watch the water flowing through the farm.

But if you have already made the journey to Azumino, it is worth understanding why this landscape exists in the first place.

Looking at the fields on your own, your experience may end with the thought, “There is a lot of wasabi growing here.”

With more background knowledge, different questions begin to appear:

  • Why can wasabi be grown in Azumino?
  • Where does the enormous volume of water flowing through the farm come from?
  • Why is wasabi cultivated in this type of environment?
  • How are the water temperature and sunlight controlled?
  • Which part of the wasabi plant is the “wasabi” we usually eat?

Once you understand the background, the same fields start to look different.

Even eating wasabi afterward feels different. It is no longer only “spicy” or “delicious.”

Azumino has abundant water. That environment is used to grow wasabi, and the wasabi you are eating comes directly from that landscape. Understanding that connection gives the food a stronger sense of place.

You can certainly visit Daio Wasabi Farm on your own and enjoy it. But if you want to understand why the farm exists here and how the local environment makes wasabi cultivation possible, a guide can add another layer to the experience.

Instead of returning home with only photographs, you can return with a story about why wasabi grows in Azumino.

I think that kind of travel is far more interesting.

Private Guided Tours to Daio Wasabi Farm

Private tours to Daio Wasabi Farm are available from Matsumoto and the surrounding Nagano area.

A tour means you do not have to arrange every stage of the journey yourself, and you may also be able to visit nearby attractions with a guide.

It can be a particularly useful option if you:

  • Do not want to spend valuable travel time arranging transportation
  • Have limited time in the area
  • Want to learn about Azumino rather than simply see it

This service also arranges a car, which makes it convenient if you would rather leave the transportation arrangements to someone else.

Daio Wasabi Farm is worth seeing, but understanding why it exists here can make the visit much more memorable.

What Is the Best Way to Get to Daio Wasabi Farm?

There is no single best way to get to Daio Wasabi Farm from Matsumoto.

A bicycle is my favorite option if you want to move slowly, stop whenever something catches your attention, and enjoy the scenery between Hotaka Station and the farm.

A rental car makes more sense if you want to cover a larger part of Azumino and visit places that are difficult to reach by bicycle or public transportation.

A guided tour is worth considering if you want to spend less time arranging transportation and more time understanding the area itself.

For me, Azumino is most enjoyable when the journey is not only about reaching the next tourist attraction. The water, fields, mountain scenery, small shops, and unexpected stops along the way are part of the experience too.

Spend a little more time and take a slightly more local route. I believe that is one of the best ways to enjoy Azumino.
